Mission One Heart Many Voice conference 1 – 3 September

Bro Paul Despoges 500Bros Graham Mike and John as volunteers at the 2013 conference with Bros Luke Keighery and Paul Despoges. From John Tweedie, from Harbourside North and the Shire Group

The Mission: One Heart Many Voices Conference being held on-line from 1 - 3 September, being arranged by Catholic Mission and Catholic Religious Australia has a very interesting line-up of speakers including Hugh Mackay, Robert Fitzgerald and former Socceroo Craig Foster.

Full detail can be found via the link https://2021.mohmv.com.au/ .

The first One Heart Many Voices Conference was held in 2013 and quite a number of Catenian Brothers from various Sydney Circles acted as volunteers  at that conference and at each of the three subsequent conferences in 2015, 2017 and 2019.  I was the Catenian co-ordinator for each.

Background:
The Catenians had previously been volunteers at the 2012 Proclaim conference in Chatswood and when Peter told me of the inaugural Mission: One Heart Many Voices conference, I asked if Catholic Mission might like our assistance.  Peter jumped at the idea.

As the upcoming 2021 conference has gone Virtual, like most such events these days, our volunteer services are not required as in the past.  But when I heard about the Conference last week from Jon Donnelly from Warringah Circle (one of our past volunteers), I contacted Peter and asked if he would like us to publicise the conference among Catenians. His response was a most definite yes.

Leadership Now

"Come, let us talk this over. Let us dare to Dream." (Let us Dream Prologue 7)

A day with young people exploring issues that are especially relevant to them and for us all. 4 September 2021

A virtual conference 1–3 September 2021

Why should I bring my voice to this conference?

We are experiencing cultural, social, environmental, political and economic changes in our world and you are invited to be curious and creative in this time of liminality, transition and interruption in how to lead with a mission heart now.

If you are:

Passionate about mission and wanting to nurture your vocational heart for mission

Striving creatively for justice, peace, reconciliation and inclusion

Believing in God's mission of love and mercy in Australia and globally

Serving or leading in an agency, organisation, community, Religious Congregation or parish

Seeking professional and personal development

Looking to engage with people of goodwill and diversity nationally and internationally in a multi-sector dialogue

Interested in the dialogue and emerging themes for the Plenary Council

Hoping to be empowered with a vision of mission that is collaborative, scriptural and deeply theological, that affirms, enables, encourages and inspires;

Looking for a few surprises Then this conference is for you! Inspired by Jesus, this conference will focus on themes of encounter on the margins, inclusion, governance and synodality and challenge you to consider contemporary Mission in light of Pope Francis' teaching, witness and vision of liminal leadership in mission.

This is our fifth Mission: one heart many voices conference and we're taking the opportunity to do things differently. In response to the signs of the times, the conference will be held online and embrace the many opportunities this affords. When and where?

A Special Covid Circle Newsletter - a window into what circle members have been up to in lockdown

As he began preparing the August Manly newsletter, secretary and editor Terry Hayes was looking at the usual announcement of the meeting and dinner, a report on the National Conference and some welfare reports, not much news in a Covid lockdown, what can he add to fill his normally very informative and full newsletter?

Then he thought, 'what if I ask the boys what they've been up to in lockdown' and ask them to send some photos?

The newsletter began as usual -

02 tony banks 180The Manly Zoom meeting on Wednesday August 18 will hear from a special guest speaker, our own Fr Tony Banks OSA speaking on "Our Augustinian paths to justice" – the work of the Augustinian Order in the area of Justice and Peace. Fr Tony is the Assistant General of the Augustinian Order based in Rome and a member of the Order's International Commission on Justice and Peace.

All are welcome to join the Manly August meeting for Fr Tony's talk at 7:15 for a 7:30 start on Zoom by logging in at - https://us02web.zoom.us/j/81886347775?pwd=dGZLQ3h0WDNBMUlORldSby9HOHZldz09

After the report on Manly's last meeting the newsletter took a twist -

COVID lockdown in Sydney – how Manly Brothers are handling it!

The COVID lockdown in Sydney is putting a pretty serious clamp on all sorts of activities. However, there are ways of occupying time.

01 terrypaul 400Brothers now mostly go for walks where they live, although Terry Hayes and Paul Pearson have begun walking at Curl Curl – the photo (right) shows a recent scene there.

The masked avengers – Terry Hayes (left) and Paul Pearson! Well not really, just the masked Catenians trying to keep up a modicum of exercise during Sydney's COVID lockdown! Yes it was a cold morning but sunny and the view was excellent.

03 trivia 250Zoom trivia has been reinstated and the gathering (including 2 Friends of Catenians) on Tuesday, 20 July 2021, while small, was a most enjoyable evening. Zoom trivia really is a terrific way to beat the COVID lockdown blues! The laughter and chat during the evening made it a very relaxing time for all involved. It definitely helped soften the blow of being in lockdown. And best of all … no-one takes it seriously!

04 trivia2 300Zoom Trivia on Tuesday, 3 August was another highly enjoyable lockdown-busting evening. Trevor and Chemene were the quizmasters. Below from left: Narrelle and Adam Smith; Ann and Terry Hayes; Greg Dunn; Paul Pearson; Trevor and Chemene. It was also Trevor's birthday on 3 August – Happy Birthday Trevor!

terrygladys 250Terry Hayes and his wife Ann have been having "elevenses" with NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian each day. Coffee and cake while Gladys gives her daily COVID press conference has been something of a ritual. The Premier says she is delighted that Terry and Ann share their morning tea with her!

06 gregmaria 250Greg Dunn and his wife Maria escaped the lockdown gloom with a Christmas in July celebration in their driveway with their daughter Emily. Love the tree!

Mike and Maryanne Guy completed a 14km walk from Dee Why to Manly Dam as part of a fund-raiser for Augustinian Volunteers Australia. Photo below shows Mike Guy and Michael mikewalk 250Bowyer at the back with Honorine Jarkey, Adriana Bowyer and Maryanne Guy (the photographer).

Mike Guy put himself to work on finally (after what he said were "12 years of procrastination and inactivity"!) 08 mike paving 250paving his BBQ area. The COVID lockdown enabled this important project to be successfully completed. While Mike did not wear the "tradies" fluoro gear, he did remember to wear knee pads! Bring your own sausages and don't spill anything on the new paving!!

On a much more civilized note, Mike and Maryanne beat the lockdown blues by getting dressed up in their "good clothes" and getting takeaway from the Chez Maurice and Linda 09 mike dinner 250restaurant in Balgowlah (yes, our former Bastille Day lunch restaurant!) for a Saturday date night at home! Mike said the guy in the bottle shop "looked him up and down wondering where he was going in lockdown"! Needless to say, a wonderful dinner followed – the service was pretty good too!

10 paul grass 250Paul Pearson has been busy preparing his shady back yard for artificial grass, moving 1 1/2 tons of road base by bucket down millions of steps, then levelling and compressing! Can't wait for the grass and cutting for all of those angles! Of course, without COVID, Paul would have been able to concentrate on his "real" paying work and wouldn't have the time to undertake such manual labour jobs!

11 jack 200The rest of Paul's time is spent catching up with grandson Jack (left) in the UK. This is likely to continue until October 2022, when Paul's daughter Abaigh, her husband Ben and Jack plan to move out here to live. Jack now has more hair than Paul !

John McCarney spent valuable time during the lockdown scoring "brownie points" for helping out with domestic duties at home [a tongue-in-cheek comment of course as John is always helping out at home]. His wife Anne was hard-pressed to keep up with him so as to take photos! And if you believe that … ! This of course sets a very dangerous precedent for other Manly Brothers!

johnmc 2 450As can be seen, John McCarney is obviously a man of many talents! Clothes hanger-outer extraordinaire, and a Gold medal in floor tile mopping!

And to top it off, he definitely knows which end of the remote is up!

Anne McCarney of course has countless Gold medals for years of work of Olympic proportions!

13 brian 250Brian Hamer and his wife Gai have been walking around the district taking in the wonderful sights at places like Manly Dam.

Brian harboured some thoughts of Olympic kayaking but thought better of it and just enjoyed the scenery instead.

14 david 300David Addington and his wife Mary-Anne were fortunate enough to make good their "escape" to Magnetic Island in Qld for their annual sojourn North. David said they were having a wonderful time there and were so lucky to get away from Sydney before the latest COVID outbreak. The photos below will make us all envious but it's great that they are enjoying their break.
It's great that David was able to "take one for the team" in escaping to Qld! Will he ever come back!

15 peterS 118Peter Stephenson and his wife Maurine are both keeping well. They have both had their 2 COVID jabs. Peter says their "out-of-house efforts have been limited to trooping out at dawn to get tucker and the odd bottle of wine". Peter said he is busy writing memoirs and processing photos for Caritas re next year's Project Compassion and the Christmas Appeal. He said all Caritas staff are working from home.

Peter said they are looking forward to getting away to Forster ASAP. He said he hopes to get to a Manly Catenian meeting as soon as the club is open again and we resume our meetings there.

16 johnC 250 John Colwell and his wife Sue are both well. John goes to Lucinda Cottage in Turramurra for respite "for us both!", Sue said. He goes in again on 19th of August for 8 nights. The last time was in May (June was cancelled). Sue said that Lucinda Cottage, under Hammond Care, is a beautiful old home in Turramurra complete with tennis court, swimming pool, billiards room with an outing in the bus every day (although not at the moment). She said John is very content there and the staff think he is wonderful. Sue said she reads the Manly Circle newsletter each month to John and he really enjoys it.

Photo shows John at Lucinda Cottage.

17 finger 400Laurie deAmbrosis says he and Liz have been largely filling in their time on separate projects - Laurie principally on gardening, odd jobs and reading "which don't make for attractive photos", while Liz has been busily knitting for the church Craft group fete (that is, if and when they ever get the chance to have it).

romano 300She has made some interesting finger "puppets" (photos below). Her favourite is the bride and groom (very cute).

Romano Di Donato and his wife Terese recently welcomed their new Grandson Luke Remi Stevens (born to Romano's daughter Natalie and her husband Sam on Saturday, 17 July 2021).

Congratulations Romano and Terese!

Who would have thought there was so much variety in what we've all been up to in lockdown?

red chilli, deseeded and finely chopped

1 tsp mirin (see Tip, below) •
1 lime, juiced

Serves 4

10 mins to prepare and 10 mins to cook, plus 10 mins marinating, 357 calories / serving

Method

Put the soy sauce, sugar, lime juice, chilli, ginger and garlic in a non-metallic shallow dish and stir well to combine. Add the salmon and turn to fully coat in the marinade. Cover the dish with clingfilm and leave to marinate at room temperature for 10 mins.

Meanwhile, make the slaw. Put the cucumber, carrot, white cabbage, spring onions, coriander and cashew nuts (if using) in a large bowl. Combine the sesame oil, mirin and lime juice in a small bowl and pour over the slaw. Mix well and set aside.

Bring a large pan of water to the boil and add the pak choi. Cook for 3-4 mins until the veg is just tender, then drain and keep warm.

Heat the sesame oil in a large non-stick frying pan over a medium-high heat and add the salmon, skin-side down. Cook for 3-4 mins until golden and caramelised, then turn over. Add the remaining marinade from the dish and cook for a further 2-3 mins or until the salmon is just cooked through.

Transfer the salmon to 4 serving plates and place the pan of marinade back on the heat. Simmer for 1 min until slightly thickened. Spoon over the salmon and serve with the pak choi and slaw.

that so our hearts, from things of earth uplifted,
may long alone to gaze upon Thy face.

Let's have a laugh

Four Catholic ladies are having coffee together. The first one tells her friends, "My son is a priest. When he walks into a room, everyone calls him 'Father.'"

The second Catholic woman chirps, "My son is a Bishop. Whenever he walks into a room, people say, 'Your Grace.'"

The third Catholic woman says smugly, "My son is a Cardinal. Whenever he walks into a room, people say, 'Your Eminence.'"

The fourth Catholic woman sips her coffee in silence. The first three women give her this subtle "Well…?"

She replies, "My son is a gorgeous, 6'2, hard bodied stripper. When he walks into a room, people say, 'Oh my God…'"

"My husband purchased a map of the world and gave me a dart.

"Wherever the dart lands, I'll take you there for a fortnight when Lockdown ends.

It turns out we will be spending two weeks behind the fridge"!!!

In The Library
No loud talking in the library! PLEASE! It is best to whisper!!
A man was looking for a place to sit in a crowded university library. He asked a girl: “Do you mind if I sit beside you?” The girl replied, in a loud voice

“NO, I DON’T WANT TO SPEND THE NIGHT WITH YOU!”

All the people in the library started staring at the man, who was deeply embarrassed and moved to another table. After a couple of minutes, the girl walked quietly to the man’s table and said with a laugh: “I study psychology, and I know what a man is thinking; I bet you felt embarrassed, right?” The man responded in a loud voice:

“$500 FOR ONE NIGHT? I’M NOT PAYING YOU THAT MUCH!”

All the people in the library looked at the girl in shock.

The man whispered to her:..... “I study law, and I know how to put a counterpoint!”
