Success on the proposed 'Practising Catholic' motion

- contributed by the motion proposer George Little

Readers will recall that at the recent ANC Conference a motion was passed with 72 votes, approving the deletion of the word "practising", when describing a potential member as a Catholic, for the purposes of assessing a potential member's eligibility for membership of the Association.

The next phase of the process was to garner another 128 votes to obtain at least 200 votes supporting the motion.

That figure has been met and exceeded and so the motion will be put to the whole Association world wide.

Hopefully this will be an opportunity to unite Members wherever they are in a common cause.

The deacon's ministry in a time of change

michaelA contribution by Deacon Brother Michael Tan

It is fitting that we are reflecting on the deacon's ministry during this time of change. In responding to the Plenary Council's call to a deep listening to the voice of the Holy Spirit, we must remember that the same Chinese word can speak of both this time of change as both a crisis (and therefore, a time of danger) and an opportunity (and therefore, a time of renewal). In this context, I would like to reflect on approaching the 2022 National Deacons Conference as an opportunity for the renewal of the Church in Australia, and to receive the fruits of the Plenary Council in terms of synodal nourishment of diaconal ministry for the journey.

The 2022 Deacons Conference has the theme, "Going into the deep – Speak Lord, your servant is listening." This theme calls to mind the Parramatta Diocesan Forum in 2019, when Bishop Vincent Long OFM Conv, Bishop of Parramatta, invited us all to go into the deep as missionary disciples to the margins of society, and to ensure that it is not just business as usual. The theme also invites us as the People of God to adopt a listening heart, a heart that listens deeply to the voice of the Holy Spirit – to which the Plenary Council calls us.

The daily livestreamed morning prayer of the first session of the Plenary Council invited us all to listen from the depths of our hearts to the voice of the Holy Spirit, a listening to dadirri – the deep spring inside each of us that we call on, calling us to experience the wholeness of our relationship with nature and creation. This leads to a deep inner peace and silent awareness of the still small voice of the Holy Spirit speaking of God's love for each of us and for creation.

It is from this space of deep listening and inner peace that the deacon is called to be the Church's service sacramentalised. The deacon's vocation is to be a sign or sacrament of the Lord who came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. This sign or sacrament is expressed in terms of a vocation to be a herald or messenger of the Gospel. The deacon as messenger then takes on a servant leadership ministry on behalf of the bishop who ordains him. His ministry is to bring the Good News to the margins of society, standing in the deep and messy space at the margins of society. In this way, he takes on what Pope Francis describes as the smell of the sheep in the deacon's synodal ministry of servant leadership for the sake of the Gospel.

This synodal ministry is to walk with, and accompany the sheep. Just as the risen Christ accompanies the disciples along the road to Emmaus, the deacon is called to listening deeply to the risen Christ along the road to Emmaus. The deacon then accompanies the risen Christ in listening to the stories and experiences of the disciples. In listening deeply to the wounded disciples' experiences of hurt, humiliation, discrimination, marginalisation and despair, the deacon walks synodally with those on the margins. Being a herald of the risen Christ who ministers to the bewildered disciples, the deacon then at the end of the day, if invited into the house, joins the disciples in recognising Christ at the breaking of bread.

The 2022 National Deacons Conference will be held at St. Joseph's Retreat Centre, Baulkham Hills, from 13 to 16 October 2022. For more information about the 2022 National Deacons Conference, contact deaconsconference2022@gmail.com.

Deacon Michael Tan is a recently ordained Permanent Deacon of the Diocese of Parramatta and the Conference Convenor for the 2022 National Deacons Conference. He is currently serving at St Madeleine Sophie Barat Parish, Kenthurst.

The Bible says "faith without works is nothing" so destiny is great, fate is great, faith is great – but you still have to work at it. I don't just sit at home and wait for it all to unfold.

At the end of the day, it's not about what you have or even what you've accomplished.

It's about what you've done with those accomplishments.

It's about who you've lifted up, who you've made better.

It's about what you've given back.

Paul Marsden, Chair of The Shire Group, welcomed City of Sydney Circle President, Peter Gialouris and brothers, guest of honour Monsignor Brian Raynor and Province 21 Director Graham Short.

City of Sydney was the sponsoring Circle of the The Shire Group. In what may the first meeting/dinner of its knd, in Catenians, dinner was held prior to the meeting due to the early closing of the club's kitchen at 7:30pm AEDT.

Pictured are joint meeting attendees including Mgr Brian Raynor with on his right Peter Gialorius and Paul Marsden.

It is not known if Bro Kevin Redman (kneeling) was seeking absolution although earlier in the evening he had confessed to hiding Christmas lights under shop counters to retrieve them Christmas Eve and purchase them at discounted prices!

God, we offer to you the fears in us that have not yet been cast out by love:
May we accept the hope you have placed in the hearts of all people,
And live lives of justice, courage and mercy;

Robert John Francis Butler 1939-2021

Rob Butler 300A contribution by Peter Christie.

Educated at De La Salle Malvern then obtained Bachelor of Dental science at University of Melbourne. Over a number of years , Rob also obtained a licentiate in dental surgery, became a fellow of the International college of dentists a master of data science and achieved many other awards.

His lifelong study was the Church and its workings. This continued to his last days.

Rob joined the Navy as a dental surgeon becoming a full commander and the fleet surgeon. Apart from serving on many shore bases he served  on both aircraft carriers Sydney and Melbourne on trips between Australia and Vietnam during that war. During this period he also became the honorary dental surgeon to the Governor general. One way to get free dental treatment!

The  great love of Rob's life was Wendy. Rob loved his three children but adored his six grandchildren.

His passions were many and varied: hillclimbs and racing in sprites (I understand his ability in this area was rather limited, being renowned for finishing backwards); playing jazz piano in different bands and later, (much more successfully) four wheel driving far into the outback.

After leaving the Navy in the 80s , Rob joined Westmead hospital Sydney becoming director of dental services and community health services. Somewhere he fitted in lecturing in clinical operative dentistry on an honorary basis. The University of Sydney later awarded him the rare honour of adjunct associate professor.

Rob served in the 1990s as executive director of the Australian dental association(for ten years)  and served on many national government bodies. Frankly, the variety of professional and advisory boards that Rob served on are far too numerous to mention here.

As we know, Rob joined our circle as an early  member and was a knowledgeable and wise counsellor since he had been a member of a Sydney circle for many years.

In retirement, Rob edited a Dental news bulletin, an Irish newsletter, a fourwheel driving newsletter. These are the ones I know about!

As we all know, Rob was passionate about his Catholic faith but wanted (and worked with the Goulburn and Canberra Catholic reform group) to see big changes in the way our Church operates. In his usual manner, he threw himself into doing whatever he could to persuade and help push change. Maybe he is now working hard on this work in his present heavenly abode!

On a personal level, Jean and I knew Rob for about 15 years and both enjoyed his company and admired his knowledge. Possibly, Rob and myself had a bit of difficulty interrupting each other, but somehow we managed to exchange our opinions!

Let us salute our friend , our colleague, our fellow Catholic – a fine man of our time.

Chinese Sticky Lemon Chicken Recipe…

Celebrate Chinese New Year (or any Friday night in!) with this homemade version of that takeaway classic, sticky lemon chicken. Crisp golden chicken is coated in a glossy lemon sauce for a delicious sweet and sour dinner for all the family.

2 tbsp light soy sauce
1 lemon, juiced
1 tsp sugar
3 chicken breasts, cut into bite-sized pieces

1 tbsp sesame seeds
rice and broccollini, to serve (optional)

For the sauce
1 small onion, roughly chopped
1 tbsp cornflour
2 lemons, zest and juice

Method…

  1. Put the soy sauce, lemon juice and sugar in a bowl and add the chicken pieces. Mix to coat, then cover and chill for 10 mins to marinate.
  2. Remove the chicken pieces from the marinade with a slotted spoon and toss in the cornflour. Heat half the sesame oil in a wok or large frying pan over a high heat.

News from around the circles

CARLINGFORD:

CIRCLE NEWS

It is planned to confirm details of our December Christmas function at the November meeting as a number of options are still being canvassed. It is appreciated that the timing of the lifting of COVID restrictions and the re-opening of catering facilities have delayed settling this issue until later than normal.

The 10.00am Tuesday morning "coffee club" has resumed its face-to-face gatherings at the re-opened coffee shop, now called "TILTED", in the Carmen Drive shopping centre. Reports indicate that the first two meetings were well attended and enjoyed by all.

At its meeting on 4th November, 2021, Circle Council decided that:

  1. The Hills Circle will be asked if they plan to host our traditional joint meeting in January, 2022. If not, our Circle will offer to host at CBSRC, and
  2. The proposal to re-schedule the Clergy night postponed in October, 2021 on 15th February, 2022 be supported. Opinion will be canvassed at the November Circle meeting on whether there will be a Mass before dinner that night or whether it will be a social opportunity for Priests and Deacons.

Our 400th Circle Dinner
This milestone event will take place on 15th March 2022, the last Dinner meeting for the current Circle Council.
Your Circle Council has decided that it will be a Ladies' night with a Guest Speaker and other invited guests.

"This is Your Life" Type Profiles and Photographs
During the October Zoom Circle meeting, suggestions were made that we should publish more details of Brothers lives and more photographs to improve camaraderie.

It was agreed that these proposals will be discussed in more detail at a face-to-face meeting.

In preparation for such discussions, it is noted that:

  1. Appendix 6, General Data Protection Regulations, on pages 121-122 of the Association's Handbook of Procedures, July 2019 details the UK procedures and regulations in this regard.
Are there equivalent privacy regulations in Australia?
Photographs, for example, are personal data and cannot be taken, stored or used without consent.
  2. A recent Newsletter from our Province 20 twinned Circle Joondalup 339 contains the following:

Safe-Guarding. Provincial Safe-guarding Officer is Bro Kxxx Mxxx, KM's email and mobile phone provided
Photos and/or video may be taken at this event. By taking part in this event you grant the event organisers full rights to use the images resulting from the photography/video filming, and any reproductions or adaptations of the images for fundraising, publicity or other purposes to help achieve the group's aims. This might include (but is not limited to), the right to use them in their printed and online publicity, social media and press releases. If you do not wish to be photographed please inform an event organiser.

Should our Newsletter contain a similar notice? Should similar advice be given to our Guests who may find it a bit confrontational, rather than welcoming?

Does Province 21 or the ANC have any advice/guidance on this issue?

HARBOURSIDE NORTH:

Truthful Jones speaking competition on November 18th
Something unheard of has happened. We had two Brothers eagerly put up their hands to represent Harbourside North at the Truthful Jones Competition being held in Cairns on Thursday 18th.  Thanks to Martin Ryan and Chris Bradley.  As Chris represented us last year when we hosted the Comp in Mosman, he has generously stood aside to let Martin take on the challenge.

Martin will speak on "How I single-handedly changed the international game rules of Rugby League".  Martin would very much appreciate your support on the night, so please Zoom in along with him.
We will need to attend by Zoom, but Cairns Circle will be meeting face to face on the night.  It will be a hybrid affair.

Wine Tasting Final selection
At dinner on the 11thNovember  we will be finalising our replacement  dinner wines following our recent virtual wine tasting.  The selected wines are:

Britannia Creek Sawmill  Pinot Noir 2019 Yarra Valley
Distant South Sauvignon Blanc 2019 Tasmania
Isabel Estate Sauvignon Blanc 2020 Marlborough
Chapel Hill The Chosen Shiraz 2018 McLaren Vale

CITY OF SYDNEY:

We have been waiting for nearly 18 months to be able to socialise and meet face/face and finally the restrictions have been eased.

The Occidental Hotel will be open for persons that have been double vaccinated and if it the same procedure as the Melbourne Cup Luncheon you will be checked in at the Erskine Street door.

Seeing that we have our ladies accompanying us the starting time is 7:30pm for dinner at 8:00pm.

This is on the first Wednesday – 1st December 2021.

The guest speaker is Brother John Formosa from Warringah Circle who will speak in the Shroud of Turin.

Elizabeth Gialouris has organised s gift for the ladies and the menu has been selected.

sydeny at the shire copyCombined meeting with The Shire Group with Mons. Rayner

It was a good night in the Sutherland Shire to meet in a combined meeting with The Shire Group at Club Central a palatial catholic club at Menai. We had five brothers (Peter Gialouris, Peter O’Reilly, Bob O’Mara, Ron Daly and Frank Filocamo) make the trip to be with a youngest circle. It was q quite historic night with the oldest Circle in Australia having a meeting with the youngest Circle. Monsignor Brian Rayner accepted an invitation from Bob O’Mara and attended the meeting and dinner. You can see from the photograph we had a fun night and the Mons giving Kevin Redman his blessing. The dress is more casual than C of S meetings and with a bistro meal the meeting was after dinner. Good discussion followed the meeting with the Mons entering into the conversation with his views. The Presidents agreed that we should repeat the meeting on an annual basis, rotating the venue.

KU-RING-GAI:

October Circle Meeting
26 Ku-ring-gai Brothers, one visiting gentlemen, Jerome McTeigue, plus our guest speaker, Fr Tony Banks OSA, attended the Circle meeting via Zoom, held on Monday, October 11th.

Fr Tony, who is the Assistant General of the Augustinian order, a member of the order's General Curia, responsible for the Asia-Pacific region and based in Rome (from where he was speaking to us through the wonders of modern technology). He is also a member of the order's International Commission on Justice and Peace and in charge of the Augustinian's UN program. His talk focused on the order's Justice and Peace program. After briefly taking us through the scriptural and constitutional underpinnings of the Augustinian approach to social justice and the guiding principles and tools that they use, Fr Tony showcased a range of projects the order is involved in across the world in countries as diverse as The Congo, Algeria, Ecuador, Borneo, Venezuela, Nigeria, the Philippines, the USA and Australia.

The last of these, under the name of the Rainbow Warrior project, involved working with a small group of disadvantaged indigenous kids in Redfern which serendipitously has led to the rediscovery of some words from the language of the people of the Sydney basin prior to colonisation. Part of this project involved giving the kids mobile phones on the condition that they learned to text each other within 3 months, which was a success and partly responsible for discovering more words from the aboriginal language (now documented at over 1200 words). It has also resulted in some of the kids involved evolving to become tourist guides in Sydney.

Fr Tony generously responded to questions after his talk. In response to a question as to how we as individuals can help, he stressed the importance of advocacy on social justice issues, suggesting supporting the work of organisations such as Jesuit Refugee Services and Caritas. He has also supplied several tax-deductible Augustinian funds that Brothers may wish to contribute to, which can be found at the following link: https://www.osa.org.au/support-us/

The Ku-ring-gai Circle was privileged to have Fr Tony spend his time with us so generously, as he had previously talked at an earlier Manly Circle meeting. President, Br Stefan Wawryzniak thanked him appropriately on our behalf.

dam walkers 400The walkers continue… with a few differences!
After our recent break-out investigations, as the world opens up, the 7:15am walks will continue along Manly Beach from Queenscliff on Tuesdays, moving to Manly Dam on Thursdays for now. We'll investigate whether the parking situation improves at Queenscliff on Tuesdays, and we could move to Manly Dam for both Tuesdays and Thursdays if the parking remains dire.

A new skill has risen to the surface for Greg Dunn.
singers 400At the end of a recent St Kieran's YouTube recorded Sunday Mass, Greg (left centre), Kevin Mascarenhas (right) and Tomek Kromrych (left) (Tomek's wife Beata plays the violin at Mass with Kevin) engaged in some musical "lip-syncing" of the end of Mass hymn. Tomek and Greg played the 24-string tennis racket (as opposed to the more usual 12 or 6-string guitar), and Kevin sang into his banana microphone! Everyone had a great time and the music sounded great. Those tennis rackets had a sound all their own! Greg's manager is negotiating an Australian tour once the lockdowns permit!

Well done everyone!
